Wuhan Safety and Environmental Protection Research Institute was established in 1959. It is an important institute of the former Ministry of Metallurgical Industry and has been administrated by the State Environmental Protection Administration and the Ministry of Labor successively, and was named Wuhan Environmental Protection Research Institute and Wuhan Safety Engineering Research Institute respectively. In 1999 the institute was transformed to a science-tech enterprise formally and admitted by China Iron & Steel Industrial and Trading Group Company with a formal title of Wuhan Safety and Environmental Protection Research Institute. Presently the institute has more than 520 employees and over 75% of them are professional technicians including 15 senior engineers of professor level, 136 senior engineers, 125 engineers, among whom 36 persons are enjoying allowance from the state government. Meanwhile the institute is also authorized to award the master’s degree in 2 subjects: ***** safety engineering science and environmental engineering. A fully automatic production line for explosion detonator without initiating explosive was set up in Sweden in 1992 with an annual capacity of 25, 000, 000 units which was praised as the hi-tech production line in the 21st century. The scientific achievements of the institute have been transformed into products continuously since reform and opening. 10 items have been awarded “the national key new products”, 8 items “the important new products” awarded by Hubei province and more than 20 items win directive or guiding popularization prize for the best practical technology by the State Environmental Protection Administration of China. The institute has established cooperative relations with 36 countries and regions including America, Canada, Sweden, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, and some international organizations such as the World Safety Organization (WSO), and the International Labor Organization (ILO), and received over 500 foreign experts and scholars giving academic lectures, holding commercial negotiations and technical investigations at our institute; meanwhile we also send 300 person-time of our employees to visit Sweden, Germany, Australia, Japan, Holland and other countries and regions for academic exchanges, advanced study and training. The institute is admitted the membership by APOSHO, IEA and other international organizations. The State Science and Technology Commission had executed a comprehensive evaluation for the 5000 research institutes in China. As the only one institute engaging in scientific research of safety and environmental protection, our institute has been listed in top 300 institutes in China. The institute is ranked No.61 in the fields of comprehensive scientific research and technical service, and is awarded the advanced unit in environmental protection by the State Environmental Protection Administration of China and the advanced unit in technology market by Hubei Science and Technology Commission and also the “civilized unit” by Wuhan municipal government for many years. Since the system reform of scientific and research units, the institute has centralized technological superiorities and is capable to undertake designing and contracting of safety, environmental protection and blasting projects, and serves the society and enterprises with engineering design, consultation service, project contracting and product supply. The institute has contracted over 3000 safety and environmental protection projects with total construction price of nearly RMB 8 billion Yuan and created good social and economic benefits.
