Soft magnetic alloys are materials that can be easily magnetized, thus exhibiting high permeability, and just as easily demagnetized. High permeability allows the design of smaller, more efficient magnetic parts. Several factors have a bearing on the soft magnetic alloy choice. One external factor is corrosion resistance, which is essential for devices exposed to weather or other corrosive environments. The most important magnetic criteria to consider are sensitivity (permeability) and strength (flux density), along with the respective cost of the alloys considered. Of the 5 families of magnetic alloys (iron, silicon iron, nickel-iron, iron-cobalt, ferritic stainless steel), nickel-iron shows the highest permeability but the lowest flux density. Iron-cobalt ranks first both in flux density and expensiveness. Silicon iron, by contrast, is placed in the middle in all three aspects.Typical MIM magnetic alloys include: Nickel-base alloy (Fe-50Ni, Fe-80Ni) Silicon iron (Fe-3Si, Fe-7Si) Iron-base alloy (Fe-2Ni, Fe) Ferritic stainless steel (430L)Typical applications for MIM magnetic alloys include sensor probes, armatures, solenoid end caps, and pole pieces.
